Measuring and Layout

You don’t have to be a mechanical engineer to measure your kitchen but you have to be accurate. You will need graph paper (print one out from our article), a pencil, an eraser, measuring tape and a calculator. The design experts at The Kitchen Cottage can help you verify your plan. When you measure, show all dimensions in inches. That way 62” won’t be mistaken for 6’2”. Start with a rough drawing of the shape of the room. Include doors, windows, breaks in the walls and any obstructions. This drawing will not be to scale but you’ll use the measurements on the graph paper to scale.

Begin measuring from a corner. Measure to the first opening or obstruction and write down that measurement. If you have a window, measure from the corner to the window casing, then measure the window from outside of casing to outside. Now continue to measure around the room in the same manner.

Note the location of all plumbing and gas pipes. Measure the dimensions of all appliances you’ll be using. When you have completed measuring, you can begin planning a layout. Use the 3/8" scale graph paper (3/8 inch equals one foot). Refer to your measuring sheet and begin drawing the lines that represent walls, leaving spaces for doorways and using shaded areas to represent windows. You will need to locate the space for your sink and appliances. The spaces left need to be filled in with cabinetry. A cabinet spec book would help you with sizes and options of cabinetry.
